"Very Fast, easy to setup, nice tech's, got faster, and availability in a rural area."
"Complex contract, 7-10 days to wait to get a tech out, got more expensive (The whole cable package)."

I recently moved into the Lords Valley area from NYC and was very worried that no one would have the area setup for Broadband and Digital cable services. Especially due to the lack of posters from my area of PA. Luckily I was wrong, Blue Ridge Communications had the area setup for me.
I got nearly all the services that BRC offered, Hi-Speed Internet (G-10), HDTV, DVR (Multi-Room), and all the Digital Channels BRC offered. The package is expensive but no more expensive than my old cable company Cablevision. The only service they didn't offer in my area yet was the digital phone service, that is fine with me since I have no interest in the service.
Anyway we just had the home built so we needed to start from scratch. We already had cable jacks in our home so the tech had to just put a outside box in and run a line. The only thing that upsets me is that BRC said it would take 7-10 days to get a tech out to me. So I set a date for the tech to come, about two weeks before the move.
The tech was great, he came early and got all our services up and running in about two hours. The only problem he had was with the multi room DVR, it wasn't working at first but got it working within 20 minutes. I tested all the services including the Internet services, it worked, I signed some papers and the guy left.
Then late this week I moved in. I hooked up my TV's and everything still worked. I was worried about connecting my wireless router to the modem thinking I would have to do some setup but I didn't. Just plugged its power cord in and the Ethernet cable and it worked. My laptop connected and my Internet services worked well.
A few days later I hooked one of my desktops into my router wireless and it also worked well. I did some browsing, checked email, played some BF 2142 all worked as well as Optimum Online.
So far I am happy, now I just got to connect my other desktop wireless and Xbox 360 wireless and I will be good.
My only other worry with the service is the extensive contract they handed me, seemed like mostly standard stuff. Skimmed through it and signed it. I don't remember getting such a huge contract with Optimum Online, but I signed it and hoped it will not cause me problems down the road.
The other thing that worried me about the Broadband provider (Prolog) is that many people seem unhappy with the service. I was getting worried about the service but I forgot one thing that applied to them that doesn't apply to me, the population density of my area.
It seems like most people that complain about the service live near heavily populated areas. I really do feel their pain and I think its a crime that PTD or whoever doesn't upgrade their systems.
I live in an enclosed community in the area, about 3/4 of the residents are part time. This means less people are likely to have cable modems so that means more bandwidth for me. Let's just hope things go as well as they are now.
As for Verizon DSL and FIOS I have nothing good to say about them. I put my email into the mailing list for DSL in 2000 and up until I left the area in 2006 I never got a response telling me the service was available. So if they can't get DSL to people who live in the city what chances do they have of getting DSL or even FIOS to people who live anywhere like here?
I mean yea of course some people will be able to get the service but very few compared to Cable Broadband. Of all the people I knew that use Broadband only one person had DSL, the rest were not able to get the service. The guy who did get the DSL switched to Cable Broadband for higher speeds a few years after.
As for FIOS, I feel you are more likely to get the service compared to DSL but not any time soon. I would be shocked if even 5 years from now I will have FIOS as a Broadband option in my area. I do hope I am wrong since if FIOS comes to town it will give the cable company a reason to offer me more speed/bandwidth for the same price.
Sorry to offend the people that are pro Verizon but I am very upset with Verizon's lack of urgency to get this service to the majority of people. That's all I got to say, I will post updates sometime in the future. If anyone moves to my area and has questions feel free to pm this screen name.
*-Update Feb, 11. 2007-*
I have been using the service for 2 months now and so far I have had no problems. Except once in awhile (About once a month until I restart my PC's) I have a connection problem with my router and my connection goes to crap. I restart my PC and the problem solves itself.
Anyway I got the 10 MB service and I have be getting an average ping of 37 when I play Battlefield 2142 and except for when its a problem with the server I have mostly unlaggy play. I also download, watch streaming video, use AIM and MSN messenger services, surf the web, Xbox Live, father uses the AOL service, etc and I never had any problems.
I have two desktops, one laptop, and my Xbox 360 hooked into my router wirelessly and most of the time I have no problems using them. Except for the once a month disconnect. I used up to 3 of these devices at a time and had no loss in speed or any other problems.
I also am very happy with my Cable TV service. I wish they had more HDTV channels but I can wait. The DVR service I use on a daily basis and I cant live without it. I have all the Channels I had with Cablevision (300+). The Passport is also a great feature I have come to love. We also like the PPV with the fast forward, rewind, pause but wish they had more new movies.
I also recently learned that I qualify for DSL (When I first got here I didn't) thats great but since they only offer a fraction of the speed Cable does I won't be switching. Now I wait and see if Verizon can get FIOS out here within my lifetime.
Well thats it, I am still very happy with the service and recommend it to anyone that needs the speed I need. If you need less speed for a lower price Pro Log offers it. I will probably update again in the next few months.
*-Update June, 15. 2007-*
It has been 6 months since I got service from BRC and for the most part my service has been fine. My Pro Log broadband service has given me plenty of speed and on a daily basis I use high bandwidth applications: Streaming Video/Audio (Always in-sync, rarely stalls), Downloads (Very Quick), Video Gaming (PC/Xbox 360, ping low, I disconnect only because of the server most of the time, fast loads), Web Browsing, etc. So I have not really noticed a difference between Pro Log and Optimum Online, thats a great thing. So my marks will remain high for BRC and Pro Log, they gave me great service with little interruption.
My cable service is for the most part good but it had a few bumps. The biggest thing that upset me is I bought a second HDTV for one of the bedrooms and called BRC asking for a second HDTV box. When the guy came he was about to remove my main box and move it to the bedroom. So the person messed up my order (I figured something was up because she seemed confused and needed help with my order, why asking for a second HDTV box is so hard I will never know).
Then I explained I wanted a second HDTV box and the tech told me that currently it is impossible to have two HDTV boxes in one home. He explained it to me and I understand why, but what I don't understand is how people can be buying so many of these HDTV's and the cable companies aren't preparing for this.
The tech told me they are working on it but it will be awhile before they find a solution. But I give him my thanks since he tried so hard to get my multi room DVR and 2 HDTV boxes to work in sync.
Right now this is not a big deal because I only get a few HD channels but as time goes on (Within 1-2 years) I expect a solution since for the amount I pay per month I expected more.
The other problem is we scheduled the DVR to record some sport shows on channel 38 (SNY) and it doesn't record. We have to set it manually to record it now, this is annoying to do but we have no choice since BRC seems dumbfounded by the problem. Its also weird since we scheduled many shows to record and it works fine.
Another problem is a few times we have problems getting some channels, not often but the channel going blank/freezes for a few seconds and at certain times it happens every few minutes. Oddly it seems to happen allot on channel 38 (SNY) but it happens on other channels. The good news the day this was happening often on channel 38 (SNY) the cable company was fast to fix the problem.
The only other problem we had was our line came lose from the wind, not the cable companies fault but we had problems with our service for a few days (Mainly the VOD service).
So for the most part BRC gives great service. The broadband I feel is unmatched in speed and quality. DSL can't match it, or reach its availability. I would still give the Cable broadband service a 10 out of 10. The cable service is mostly good, the picture and sound quality is great but I think its unacceptable that I can only have one HDTV box in the whole house. The other problems we had with channel 38 (SNY) we are also unhappy with. They fixed the problems with the channel for the most part but I was expecting at least an explanation on why I have to manually record the shows? I give the Cable service a 7 out of 10.
So thats it, mostly happy with my service but a few nuisances keep me from giving this service a 10 out of 10. Still better than Satellite.
**Update July, 2. 2009**
I've been a customer of BRCTV (Prolog) for nearly three years now. What can I say about the service? I am still happy and would recommend it to anyone looking for Broadband service in the Poconos. I get 10 MB's download and about 1.2 MB's upload. All my machines are wirelessly networked to my router and my ping averages around 11 MS, great for all the gaming I do on my PC and Xbox 360. Also I had no problems with this "Bandwidth Cap" I hear about, I do it all and my service has never been suspended.
The only downside is the service and digital cable package is a bit pricey compared to DSL but I get much more speed. Also Blue Ridge Communications discontinued the multi-room DVR. The good news is we can now have as many HDTV boxes as we want and we now have separate DVR boxes on each TV now. The bad news? Our bill went up.
Now some people criticize Prolog but I have no complaints, whenever I had problems with my internet connection it was always my router and never my feed from the cable company. FIOS? LOL, I've heard about it for years and after all these years only an elite few that live in New York and New Jersey gets the service. Way to go Verizon you are really going to bring down the cable companies at the speed you are rolling out your FIOS service. Criticize Prolog all you want, at least most Pa residents can get the service.

I have the 10000/800 service from Pro-log, It is by far the most stable connection I have ever had from an ISP.... I had a few issues when I was first connected, but they worked those out quickly and professionally.
I consistently place in the top spot on the speed test in my area with over 9000 down and 740 ish up...
I am a heavy gamer and my ping times are unreal..I can ping a server in Texas and in game ping is never over 20ms.... one in California is about 25ms.....
03/25/2006
The last few weeks there have been some speed issues..it seems to be fixed now...time will tell
05/06/2009 I'm now using the 15/2 plan which was a free upgrade for the 10000/800 user's so far its been very good . there were some issues when it was first rolled out last year, but those seem to have been resolved and I get consistent speed test's and get my advertised speed at all times. Day or night, its rock solid.

Update 2/25/2009
I have had their service for about 3 1/2 years now ( boy time flies).
I am still impressed with ProLog. Connection is stable with no loss of sync for the past 6 months. Speed has been bumped to 10x1 for free but see some speeds below that during peak times.
System is now DOCSIS 3.0 and they are offering a 30 x 2 package for $80/mo.
Over all Prolog internet delivered by Service Electric is a good service.
Original Review: Cable Provider is Service Electric Cable of NJ.
Install was a major project as it required an 800' underground run for which I was quoted $2,400. I dug the trench myself and cost was $99.
I ordered the 8.0 connection speed. Initially had troubles with speeds "after the school bus" in afternoons and evenings. However for the past couple of weeks much better; Just tested 7456 x 477 at 9:00 PM tonight, so thay have made some changes. Last Result: Download Speed: 7456 kbps (932 KB/sec transfer rate) Upload Speed: 477 kbps (59.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Pings a bit slower than DSl to first hop 8ms DSL VS 12ms on average but seeing spikes up to 120ms. Same story on gateway server, 24.229.33.97 , typical is 16 but spikes to 95 at times. I am using PingPlotter to gather this data.
They have a 10GB/mo download cap for usenet and 20GB overall DL. All that speed and nowhere to go.
Price is $57.00 /mo if you do not have cable TV.

| Re: They're doing pretty good 20GB caps? Say what?
I have the 15/2 service through Blue Ridge cable. I've been told the unofficial cap is 80 GB's a month. I've done 90 gigs a couple of times and they haven't bothered me. Yet...
The 10 GB's is the usenet access they give you through Giganews. It's not much, but Giganews is excellent and a lot of other ISP's have dropped their usenet service altogether. So chalk one up for Prolog.
I can't complain about the service. I do get my full speed, and it's very reliable. The network rarely goes down, and when it does on the odd occasion it's just for a short time.
I can't get 30 Mbps speed, so I guess Blue Ridge Cable isn't DOCSIS 3?
I wish they would drop the caps altogether. Or just charge another $10 a month for unlimited. I'd pay it.
I find myself watching more and more TV online at sites like Hulu because broadcasters are stuffing 16:9 programs back into 4:3 full screen- and it looks like cr@p. At least online at the network sites and Hulu you can watch stuff in the proper aspect ratio...

I considered a commercial account, but why bother if it's got a 75 gig cap? One would think that a "commercial" account would be unlimited... and one would be wrong.
That makes no sense at all.
I don't need the upload- just the download. So if I did 145 gigs down and 5 gigs up on a commercial account- would it balance out? I wonder....
It isn't very fast though- I think their commercial accounts are only 5 Mbps.
I'm watching my shows online now, and if they're going to boot me I'll just switch to DSL. At least there aren't any caps. I'd rather go with a commercial account from Prolog because 5 Mbps is faster than 3 Mbps DSL... but I won't deal with caps.
They're gonna be in trouble if FIOS ever gets here, that's for sure.

When I checked, the commercial accounts were indeed capped at 75 GB's.
And you're right- what good is high speed when you're capped?
At least Comcast gives you a 250 GB cap. Anything less than that for a high speed account is ridiculous, what with Netflix, Hulu, and now YouTube joining in the online tv/movie streaming game.
It's a new age, and the cable companies want you to have to get your video only from them... and pay through the nose for it.

Maybe I have just been lucky, If there is a 75 GB monthly cap I have been exceeding it about 30-50% of the time.
Possibly they average your usage over a period of months, or they just don't enforce it.
I just pulled out a copy of my contract and I see no language regarding caps. Can you supply a link to this information the ptd.net web site?

i figured id rewrite my review from years ago, i didnt keep prolog long since dsl was faster and cheaper. now SECTV is 10/1 so im kinda stuck, it hangs really bad ill do one speed test it will say 300kbps down and 952kbps up, ill redo the same test instantly ill get 9542/952 just stupid company without any real plans, SECTV will go out of business when wilkes barre gets Fios in 2089 no actually wilkes-barre will have fios around 2010-2011. Nothing has changed about prolog in the past 5 years, same retarted bandwidth caps, same retarted problems, just faster speeds. i cant wait to see what Verizon does to prolog and SECTV Op Online in NJ gives people 30mb/5mb up or something like that RCN in SEPA gives 20/4 i believe what is SECTV/Prolog going to do? Well lets start off with the back story. I got a promotion at work that required me to work from the corporate headquarters... an 84 mile round trip from where I was living. With the cost of gas and the 10 hours a week of my life it was taking away I decided to relocate.
If you've ever visited the north central part of Pennsylvania - you'll no doubt agree with me that it is beautiful... but populated it isn't! Welcome to Mayberry - er, Wellsboro, PA that is. Population ~4000, also the county seat of Tioga County (just to give you an idea of how populated the rest of the county is). Colonial gas lamps line the center of the main streets, well manicured lawns everywhere you look, Main Street is full of little shops and restaurants. That's all fine and well - but what is the broadband going to be like here!?!?!
To my surprise - it's pretty damn good. Much faster service than I was getting with my Verizon DSL service 42 miles to the south.
I ordered the service in February 2008 - it's now May and I think that has given me enough time to fully test the services.
My cable company is Blue Ridge Communications, the ISP that runs the show is PenTeleData. I remember back in the early days of the internet, PTD was quite a powerful local ISP, with some services that were to be envied.
PTD seems to have a pretty solid backbone, with multiple peerings in NY, NJ & MD. Ping times across the board are very low. I subscribe to the 10/800 tier (G10 they call it) and consistently hit my cap. We had a couple of bad ice storms since I've moved here, and all the while I was happily downloading at top speed along with everyone else in the area since nobody could go anywhere.
When the service was first installed, they furnished me with a Webstar modem - it was very flaky and often needed rebooted- within a few days I purchased a Motorola 5120 and haven't had a single problem since.
I have heard of a few people having their service suspended or terminated because of high usage... I'm a heavy user and have yet to receive a letter or phone call. They do provide a tool that tells you how much data you have consumed in a given month and it seems fairly accurate when compared with the monitoring software I use on my PC.
All in all, I'm pretty happy with my new service. That can quickly change though if the service drops below unacceptable levels. I'll be sure to update my review.

I have the highest priced package available (actually through Blue Ridge Communications), G15. Had used it lightly for several months and the first time I actually used a little bit of bandwidth (to download music, WHICH THEY ADVERTISE) I got a letter from PTD saying I needed to upgrade the service (there is nothing higher), switch to a commercial account, or they'd cancel the service outright. I never had such a problem with Optimum Online, which I can only wish were available here. Rather disappointed. Now I only use it to game and surf the web mostly, as it seems that's basically all you can do without them complaining.

UPDATE: 4-11-2008 I just found out from a friend, who found out the hard way- about the actual but "unofficial" bandwidth caps for cable modem users:
Websurfer (1.5Mbit) 15G down 10G up G5 50G down 25G up G10 65G down 35G up G15 80G down 45G up
This just defies belief.
A person can do 15 gigs a month on dial-up.
Some of these levels are downright unreasonable.
People are gaming, watching streaming video, listening to streaming audio, using Skype, downloading, and doing all kinds of other bandwidth intensive stuff online. Isn't this the reason one gets broadband in the first place?
To pay for a fast connection, and be crippled with draconian caps like this is ridiculous.
I have G15, and it's great. My speed is as fast as it should be, but I've only gone over 80 GB's once, and by a small amount, so they didn't hassle me. But now that I know- I'll have to watch every megabyte.
I just figured I would let people know, because if you're thinking about signing up with Prolog you ought to know what your getting into.
*************************************************************************
UPDATE: I had G7 for a couple of years, and just upgraded to G15.
I didn't plan on upgrading... but my old Surfboard modem wasn't cutting it any more when they upgraded everyone from G7 to G10.
BRC tech came out, hooked up a Webstar modem, speed shot right up.
I decided to keep the modem. The deal was this:
Upgrade to G15, get a free modem, and the first 6 months of the service for $29.95 a month.
I was paying $42 a month for the slower speed. It was an offer I couldn't refuse.
Then I ran into speed issues.
Through trial and error, discovered that my router was causing a bottleneck.
My router, which is a D-Link that is several years old- has a WAN port that is 10 Mbps- NOT 10/100.
15 into 10 doesn't go....
I took the router out of the loop, and tried this with a fast ethernet 10/100 switch- bam! Full speed.
No, I don't always get full speed- but I usually hover between 12-15 Mbps. And I can and do regularly hit 15+ Mbps.
If you are using a router and having speed issues, check your specs for the WAN port.
I am awaiting a new router, and using the switch in the meantime.
There are still download caps, but I can't complain about the service. It was a good deal, and existing customers were eligible for a change.
I've hit 60 gigs without any warnings from Prolog, so I can live with that. I don't abuse it like some people.
I think they are starting to feel the heat from Verizon with FIOS.
Well, FIOS isn't here yet, and in the meantime I'm pretty happy with what I'm getting from Prolog at this point in time.
I figured since I've always been fast enough to criticize them, I should have a good word to say when they do something right.
**********************************************************************************
I've been with this company for years. I've seen them go from a poor provider to a provider I thought was top notch.
They offer 3 levels of service: G3- 3 mbps, G7- 7 mbps, and G10- 10 mbps. The service has been pretty good. It's very reliable, and the network rarely goes down.
They give you 10GB's a month premium news service, but the NNTP download speed is capped at 2.5 mbps no matter what speed tier you have.
Some broadband customers are now complaining that they are getting letters from Prolog telling them they are downloading too much. Some are getting these letters after downloading only 20 GB's a month. According to Prolog it violates their AUP. However, nowhere in that AUP is there a limit stated. Customers are being told verbally by customer service that the limit is 12 GB's a month. Every byte of data that flows into your computer counts- surfing, email, streaming media... etc.
The letters warn users that their accounts can be terminated and tries to force them to upgrade to commercial accounts. Commercial accounts are half the speed, for a lot more money.
I'm a 20GB+ user, and I haven't gotten a letter yet, but I will post here when I do. It's only a matter of time.
So, how many G's can you handle? What does it matter if you are restricted to 12 gigs downstream a month.

| Yes First of all, the download caps vary from package to package, the lower websurfer and G5 packages have 10-12gb limits, whereas the G15 last time I checked was 80 down/45 up, which was the old G10 limit, and yes it is annoying to have to call them up every so often to check what the new limit is because they have changed it quietly quite often during my time here.
Simply posting it on their site would lessen their phone bill dramatically, I'm sure, then again they're pretty well-off up there in the corporate office (which is who you need to talk to about this, not the brainwashed tech support, they simply follow the cue sheet).
That stuff about the newsgroups sucks too, but without any other provider in the area, what can you do? They run the show, unless you bitch to the right people, the corporate office whose email is on the brctv/ptd site I believe.

Installation simple. 2 Dynamic IP's so 2 computers or 2 routers. Service has yet to go down in 1 year of service. The only problem I have run into is the limited upload speed and when using VPN for work there is a lot of lag. There is no option to upgrade unless you upgrade to a commercial account. Paying for 7 download, tested today only getting about 2. I am going to do a direct connection tomorrow to eliminate that as the problem.
Verizon DSL available however only offers PPOE which can be a pain to setup and troubleshoot with a router.

I live in an area served by "the first cable TV system on earth", Service Electric Cable TV, which, after 50 years, is also one of the worst. Unfortunately, ProLog is the only internet service available through SEC-TV. I get an astounding 384 Kbit down, and 104 Kbit up. That's after paying for the "high speed" package for 3 years now, which promises at least 1.5 Mbit downstream.
The problem may very well be with the wiring in my neighborhood, but after repeated attempts to have someone look at the poor performance, my neighbors and I have given up. Tech support is no help at all; they consistently insist that there are "no problems reported" and their solution every time is to send a technician out to your house (and at your cost, BTW, and usually three days later). You would think that after multiple people on the same street complain about a problem, they would get the picture and check the equipment in the area.
Bottom Line: If terrible service and poor tech support are what you're after, this is the ISP for you.

| SECTV I commented on your situation yesterday..but of course because of Service Electric it never went thru. I was curious where about you are. I am in Whitehall in Helfrich Springs Apts. and they gave me the same runaround. They are trying to make it my problem. They want to send a tech out here Monday again. I keep telling them it's not just me. other tenants are complaining too. What can be done about this?
Its only been in the last 6 months. I lived here going on 3 years.
I asked to speak to a manager twice..no callback.
I wish RCN had cables in the building I would switch in a heartbeat

1 edit | Re: SECTV I'm right up the road from oilman, your not alone, as are any of you guys. I've been moaning to SECTV since Sept of 06. Seen two good months of service in a year and a half. Now = crap. Got Verizon DSL for gaming, much more stable service if you can get it. Use SECTV for browsing 2kb batch files only. I feel your pain. Welcome to the monopoly. I just don't think SECTV is in a position to keep up with the internet age. They need to be taken over. Days are numbered in my opinion, or at least I hope.

1 edit | Well... I guess I am not alone in my feelings about SECTV as well.
I get an astounding 128-170kbps up and if I'm lucky around 3 megs down but it constantly fluctuates.
I cancelled my TV service long ago and went Directv who is better but not 100%. Our cable used to get snowy and go in & out on a whim.
I used to also live at Helfrich Springs and figured it must have been the old building but when we moved to west end of Allentown it didn't really get any better plus being charged money for installation again as well.
I complained & complained and finally just gave up and said here take all your TV crap back. Prolog really is a treat as well, I had to call 3 times to get them to believe that we had internet through them when we first moved in at Helfrich. SECTV never told them I guess.
Randomly now at our new apt. we have outages and that means now VoIP as well. Informed them that every time this happens I lose my phone and they said maybe I should switch to a cooper line then.
I am very close to switching to DSL since I can't get FIOS yet, that might also mean I would need to cancel my Vonage as well so it is still up in the air.
Ughh... | |
