I have used Telus High Speed since they introduced it at 1.5Mbps. Every time they introduce new upgrades which I qualify I had to repeatedly call their support because its never done right.

For example I had moved up to their 2.5Mbps package and was stuck at 1.5Mbps speed for like a week. Finally escalated to higher tier support which identified and solved the issue in less than a few mins. I think their tier 1 support may use a bit more training.

3.0Mbps was then introduced which again did qualify but was not getting new speed. Service tech was dispatched this time and it was fixed. Again multiple calls to escalate.

I then moved to a new area. Was told it would take a day to upgrade my 3.0 line to Turbo but it never happened. This time thanks to a support member on the forums I had my Turbo next day. However, my landline would not be able to make any calls...picked up to a busy signal. I call Telus and they ended up fixing it next day; something was "loose" at the CO.

Ok now everything is blazing fast and I'm a happy camper. I just may have terrible luck with Telus but once everything works properly I have no problems with the service. It may have been down 2 days in the last 3 years.

    My Other Reviews·Shaw
Ordered Telus 6.0 on September 7th. Rep said that the gateway will arrive on September 11th, however as soon as I found out that the gateway was nothing more than but a paperweight, I requested that they change the modem to a Thompson ST516v6. Reps acknowledged the request on the same day that I ordered the request for the change to the Thompson ST516v6.

September 11th came, mailman did not have the modem in his truck. Called Telus to retrieve the tracking number, but all they gave me was this word: Cancelled. Explained to them that I specifically ordered for a Thompson SpeedTouch 516v6 as advertised and they re-entered the order again. Now the reps said that the modem will arrive around September 16th.

September 14th came by and the mail man had my modem in his truck. This time Telus made their delivery early. Went ahead and installed the filters around my house and attempted to use the Internet using the new modem. Modem successfully connects to the Internet, but the speed is just horrible. 3.0 Megs Down and 0.5 Megs up. Called tech support and claimed that they have not provisioned my Internet fully yet and I must wait until September 16th to have the full 6.0 Megs down profile. I'll see about that.

Update on September 17th: Decided to say "Screw you Telus" for not providing me the full 6.0 speed. Yeah, apparently the marketing reps decided to deceive the customer into signing up and not telling them that they can't offer FULL 6.0Megs down in my area. Well Telus, bye bye. Never coming back again. What really pissed me off is that they said the price for half the speed is the same price for 6.0 megs.

I've had it with these idiots.

Update on October 3rd: Upon talking to staff in TekSavvy, I've found another shocking conclusion: My location is just too far from the CO, which Telus just shrugged off as they don't have enough 'base boards' to support the 6.0 service. We'll see when they install another DSLAM in my area.

Update on November 22nd: Finally there is some closure to this review. Apparently something happened between October and November which literally gave me the chance to get Telus TV. (Yes, they installed a DSLAM right in the middle of the road for me , no just joking, but I'm pretty close to it.)

Ordered Telus TV on November 4th, installer came on 17th, installed Telus TV on a ST516v6 with a switch in front of the ISA 2006 router, and it was a great experience... Though the HD channels and the second STB weren't provisioned until the next day. Speed right now is capped at 3.0 even though DMT reports 15.0 on my line. DMT report of my line is below with Telus TV and Internet on the same line. Installer was nice enough to install a POTS splitter instead of a microfilter even though I was very close to the DSLAM (~ >=100m). Hope the installer's word about the newer H.264/MPEG4 (possibly?) software can get my Internet back to 6.0 at the very least.

A word about Telus TV: It isn't that half bad with the idiots living inside my house and they even say it is clear when obviously there are pixellation with the video stream. But oh well, what can you expect when they gave me free Telus TV for the first year?!

I've had Telus for 7 years I pay ($92.00 per month for phone, long distance, call features, and Internet) and overall, I'm quite happy.I'm looking forward to the 15Mbps when it's available.I just wish that there was a way to toggle the upload speed from available download bandwidth, that would be an awesome feature,(maybe it'll be allowed one of these months! The service has been down for maybe 2 days since I've had the service (that I'm aware of anyway)My only concern is that lately,(within the past 6 or 8 months) the download/upload is consistently at 50% of max and regularly at 30% or 40%; it does come back to within 95% usually within a few hours, but not consistently. The price for the Internet portion is 29.95 for a 6Meg down /512 up service, The equipment is a 2-wire device with built in wireless, 4 hardwired ports, The modem/router arrived in about 5 days and the service was there when I connected everything. The only other real option is Shaw Cable, but we don't subscribe to cable TV so just an Internet connection thru Shaw would be $40.00 to $50.00. so not realistic. As I've mentioned, I am quite pleased with the service overall; and look forward to an upgrade and 15Mbps soon.

TELUS has a great network, one of the best in the world from what I've heard. Downtime is very minimal and the speeds I get are very consistent. The people that work for TELUS and are on this forum are always very helpful; without them I might not value TELUS so highly. TELUS' loyalty and retention department is also great for getting deals on all their services when you have a problem.

New service installations ALWAYS give me headaches. Something always gets messed up. But when everything's done I can't complain.

The images posted are those from my older connections (3 mbps and 6 mbps) and the new one (15 mbps).

    Not uncommon

The vast majority of ISPs do not allow home-based servers. This is not a restriction unique to Telus but is also common to Shaw and other 'mainstream' service providers. I would think providing the router is more of a courtesy.

    Re: Not uncommon

However it is there reasoning - if they came straight out and said "We dont want you to host servers, thats why our blocks are in" it would be better. Shaw doesnt block ports, nor do other service providers (perhaps bell does, not sure) such as teksavvy etc.

    TELUS is a laggard

I'll have to strongly disagree with TELUS ADSL having fast download and upload speed. They are horribly slow in today's standards. TELUS should be offering 10+ Mbps long ago, but obviously waited until ADSL2+ technology is cheap enough for them to invest. Look for the CRTC to kick their ass very soon, although I don't trust the CRTC because they suck!

The rest of the world had 1.5 and 3 megabit service some 20 years ago. Telus's speed is near the very bottom in the entire world. Much slower than most third world isp's.

20 years ago we were using 1200 - 14400 bps modems depending on how lucky we were.

10 years ago most people still had dial-up.

I had access to 1 mbps service in 2000.

    Telus is decent.

Yah once you get setup on telus its pretty good. Albeit their greatest weekness is their phone support. I've done a few switches over the years to other isps and back to telus. While its usually painless going to the other ISP, things always seem to go wrong getting telus installed. I absolutely agree that telus would be very difficult to deal with if we didn't have telus staff helping out on the dslreports.com message boards.
I just got turbo (thanks to online staff, as the people on the phone hadn't a clue). Its the first time I have interest thats faster than the connection I had in 1998 when I first got cable broadband from shaw. Broadband in Canada is moving a snails pace (and often backwards), so I'm happy to see Telus has rolled out faster packages.

Order Telus HS Enhanced. I received a email telling me that my modem would be mailed to me in 3 days and welcomes me to lite-speed.I call back the next day to make sure that I had order the HS Enhanced and not the lite-speed, they show that I am signed up for Enhanced. On the forth day I still have not received my modem but I am being charged. I called Telus to ask about the modem and the person told me that the modem takes about 10-12 days to show up, he then said he would credit me one week. I finally get the modem after 11 days, hook up goes fine. I test the line it is 1.2megs. I then check my Telus customer service and surprise I have only been signed up normal High speed, of course being the weekend the customer service is closed. So I signed up for Enhanced, was told I lite and ended up with normal.

Update Sept 12 2006 - There have been a few times when the service has been down, 3 times in the last 9 months for about 12 hours combined. This is much better then Shaw where it was down about 6 hours a month. They increased the speed from 2.5 to 3 which can be seen. The best part in the speed is the same all day, until Shaw where it was dial-up speeds during prime time.

Update Feb 17 2007 - The news server have been useless for about 6 months, but the system has only been down for one hour in the last 6 months. The speed is about 2.2 megs on a 3.0 meg line. I do up to 120Gigs a month up and down and have not been contacted. Over all I am happy with the service.

Updated Sept 3 2007: the connection has been cutting out for weeks now, of course when you call to find out what is happening, by the 1-2 hours to get though the connection has been remade and all is fine on their end. The news server are worthless now, mostly incomplete. My speed has dropped to 1.8 mbps on a 3.0 line. When I ask about this slow down they say everything is OK on their end, it must be a problem with my computer. My computer is clean and running fine. My contract with Telus is over in 3 months and I will be going back to shaw.

Updated Sept 2008: Telus no longer supports binary news group, but the connection has been stable and the top speed is 2.9 megs with an average of about 2.3 megs on a 3.0 line. Has not complained that I have been downloading up to 180 gigs a month, this is the main reason I do not switch to Shaw is they download/upload limit

Update Nov 2009 - Called to get upped to 6/1 . Talked to a person that I could not understand. Received a new modem/router and set it up. Had to call back to get my line synced up to the 6/1. Talked to someone who spoke English and they explained how I was to give back the old modem. I get about 5.7/.6 from the line so I am happy. Does not go down much. Has been down for about 12 hours in the last year. No charges for going over the 60 gigs which is good because I average 80-90 gigs a month.

I considered many options before switching to Telus, I was thinking about Shaw back in the day (9 years ago) however their speed was way too inconsistent for me. At the beginning I ordered Telus High Speed 1.5mbps down 1mbps up for $45, the downtime was absolutely terrible for the first 2 years (Down for hours, and once a day), however after that my line has been 100% solid and have not once had my line go down. I upgraded to 6/1 a couple years ago and have not looked back. At first I rented the 3com ADSL modem from Telus as at the time their other modems were complete garbage, a couple years later Telus gave me the modem for free, and started lowering my monthly price starting with $5 and going all the way up to $15 off monthly for $30 monthly. Later I had upgraded to 6/1 and managed to save $5 a month with a price match with Teksavvy. One day a Siemens 567 modem showed up on my front door step, literally. I unpacked it thinking it would be even better than my 3com modem, oh boy was I wrong. This thing was completely borked, it was a mucked up Router/Modem combination that specialized in unstable sync rates, and dropping packets. Later I demanded that I have a Speedtouch 516v6 shipped to my house or I would cancel. I was seriously at this point after being a Telus customer for 8 years, as they couldn't even grace me with a decent modem. Don't get me wrong the 3com was awesome, however the upload speed on it was atrocious (Something like 412kbps). I would like to thank the cancellation department, I have to say 90% of everyone in tech support does not know what they're talking about. Every time I had called Tech Support they were completely useless, and clueless. However, the employees that do help out people on this forum seem quite knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. They're honestly what have kept me with Telus all these years, and hopefully for many more.

Signed up for TELUS ENHANCED hi-speed internet Feb 4/04,Install went great with hi-speed internet .Telus sent me a 2 WIRE 270 HG-e self install kit with all the goodies to get me hooked up to the internet. Enhanced 3.00 Meg kit packaged with filters, software CD and modem.
Download speeds seem to stay stable any time day or night .
About 2100 to 2200 down and 640 to 675 up.Some things never change
Only weak point is that the 2 WIRE modem/router has be reset several times a day. Called Telus and bitched a bit so they sent a new 2700-HG-E
router/modem and seems to have helped me stay online longer with no need to keep resetting .The phone line filters are a pain in the ass.
Billing is always Months behindand voice menu makes sure to riun your day.
best thing to do is don`t speak and it will hookyou up to a live person.
If your in a hurry forget the stupid voice menu.
the bottom line is that i am fed up with low speeds, lousy voice menus and mediocre support.

Re: Telus dsl will be useless in the future

I guess the implicit suggestion you are making by saying "Telus dsl will be useless in the future" is that TELUS either isn't or won't be upgrading their DSL or infrastructure in the future. I've seen too much talk on the forums about VDSL, bonding, and GPON to believe they aren't doing so. So I think your statement is invalid.

Besides, the CBC writing an article to their left-biased target audience about a study funded Cisco trying to encourage any telco to spend more isn't much in the way of proof.

Never trust a DSLR review with such poor punctuation. It's a sign that the user is not very educated and doesn't have a clue on how technology works.

well after my first 3 years i upped my service to the 10mb tier and reliably nail 9mbit with the occasional 12-13 and my upload is only .8 but still fast enough, their customer service has been great, however i am having a problem getting telus to get my laptop ordered since i am on their easy pc plan, seems somewhere between telus and qmedia my order gets lost, otherwise fast response...

    My Other Reviews·TekSavvy Solutions..
I've been with telus several years now. The most difficulty was getting it connected the last time (when I switched back from teksavvy). I went without internet for a few days and had to call multiple times to escalate the connection. Ever since it's been pretty solid. I had one issue with line quality, after a difficult time with tech support, they sent someone out who fixed it.

I guess the thing about telus, is when its working it's great (which is most of the time), if you have an issue, their call centres and tech support can be difficult to deal with it.

I use turbo and its a nice solid connection. No slow downs like I had on Shaw. I'm pretty happy with the product, not so happy with phone support.

UPDATED REVIEW: Now w/ Turbo 15Mbps / 1Mbps profile using a SpeedTouch modem.

It took a while to get this up and working properly. Originally I was put on the same port I was using for 6 - loop length was a bit on the high side and it ended up with about 9Mbps down and 600 or so up. A call to support had a truck rolled the next day, they installed a new POTS splitter (free of charge) and moved me to a RDAC (remote terminal) - unfortunately the RDAC card failed at the same time they switched me over, so it took a day or so to get a new card installed and things up and running.

    The Good:

    * Speed is decent/stable and pings are relatively low

    The Bad:

    * Call centers are inconsistent. I got lucky and got skilled knowledgeable techs the past couple times, but I've had calls where I've had script readers who I doubt could program a microwave clock if their life depended on it.
