    My Other Reviews·MV Communications,..
I first called Bell Atlantic about DSL in fall of 1998. In fall of 2009 Fairpoint finally delivered it.

It's 1467 Kbps down and 342 up. It's not heaven, but it's our only option here.

    My Other Reviews·Verizon Online DSL
Originally I had Verizon DSL then Fairpoint bought the lines. The connection is stable, and the pros end there. After 7 years I'm still only at 1.5mbit/384kbit, just like Verizon, Fairpoint doesn't want to do anything about it. Its not my line, my line is able to receive their highest tier (7.2mbit) according to a lvl 2 tech that checked the line.

Before ordering Fairpoint, I would suggest looking at some of the other DSL or Cable providers in the area, for me it would be cheaper to get DSL though GWI. and it would be at the higher sped (3mbit).

Edit: I finally dropped Fairpoint and got Earthlink cable through Time Warner;1.5mbit to 7 is a huge jump, and it's only $4 more then what Fairpoint was charging me.

This is the first year DSL is available to our private road in coastal Maine. Despite problems others may be having despite being officially prequalified, our connection has been excellent so far (about 2800 down/720 up). This is life-changing for this area, where we couldn't even get decent dialup access previously.

First 6 mo are actually $10/mo.

6/23/2008 Verizon sold wireline assets including DSL in VT/NH/ME to FairPoint communication. As a long time Verizon DSL customer had been on annual contact to reduce cost. With some trepidation called FairPoint about contract renewal. Much to my surprise was told there is no annual contract and I was grandfathered at contract price. Was told “Tax recovery fee” of $1.45 was being eliminated.

Last part of my annual DSL renewal ritual was to ask for upgrade from 1500/384 to 3000/768. Each year my house magically moves farther away or closer to the Central Office. Rep said distance is 12,600 feet (with bridged taps) too far for 3000/768. Said system allowed him to request upgrade (at no cost just like Verizon). Said it would not change until Monday. Was skeptical but had nothing to lose. Sure enough on Monday modem (Netopia 3346N) was syncing at 3360/864. Margin is down quite a bit as expected to 24/10 dB from 31/23 dB and transmit power is up. Did a few speed test benchmarks: 2875/725 kbp/s. Was hoping to be upgraded to ADSL2+, as it improves performance over long lines, but that did not happen.

6/22/2009 UPDATE One year anniversary with FairPoint. We were spared worst of the problems when FairPoint converted from using Verizon systems to their own. Email was a problem for a few days but as I do not use ISP email was not a big deal. Speed has been consistent. Have not had any problems sending and receiving email from my hosted domain. As with Verizon have occasional problems maintaining PPPoE session. However PPPoE session disconnects seem to occur less frequently with FairPoint.

FairPoint announced they will not include Usenet access for VT/NH/ME DSL customers. Seems to be a trend with broadband suppliers scaling back on Usenet access.

We have Fairpoint (THANKS Verizon -- boo hiss on bailing from northern New England), Comcast and Satellite. None of the above are all that appealing. Stayed with Fairpoint out of convenience.

    ***** Update below - 2009-05-08 ******

It gets better .... was able to manage my account for a few days, but no longer. Even after my password was "reset" by a "manager" I still cannot log on. Now, because of technical difficulties, they cannot even accept phone calls to customer support!

    From the link above:
"A spokesman said the company is troubleshooting the problem, but hasn't figured out the cause and doesn't know when service will be restored.

FairPoint has placed a recording on the toll-free numbers into the call centers informing customers of the problem and asking they call back later."

This is from the same company that suggest you go to their website to solve - Internet service problems ....

Never thought I'd say this, but hello Comcast. Will be switching soon.

You'll be much happier with Comcast.

Consider yourself lucky that you haven't had more problems than you already have with Fairpoint.

You won't be disappointed with Comcast. Their speeds are faster and the prices aren't bad either.

    My Other Reviews·RoadRunner Cable
Install: Everything for voice and DSL service was setup incorrectly. Fairpoint representatives lacked empathy and did not demonstrate any ownership to correct the issue.

Service: Unreliable. We had a disconnect problem that went on for months - we would keep opening trouble tickets only to have tech support close them without any resolution. Finally a tech noticed we had *thousands* of disconnects over the span of the past few weeks. Even he was shocked that his peers had not recognized the severity of the issue nor had they taken any action to correct the issue.

Support: Horrible! Representatives are not educated/trained well, and there appears to be a severe lack of quality control. No empowerment or ability to diagnose or correct the issue.

Bottom line: We have no choice right now - no other wired providers in our area. HughesNet, StarBand and Wildblue do not have very good reviews, so we're avoiding that route. We'd like Time Warner to begin servicing the area, but given that we are rural do not know if, or when, that will happen.

Unfortunately wireless isn't an option - only US Cellular and Verizon service our area - all other providers are out. We recently tried data services from both - US Cellular was spotty and Verizon, despite their claims that we are in a service area, flat out didn't work.

Have had DSL from Verizon and now Fairpoint for several years. I used to play online and never experienced lag like many of my friends on cable do. I qualify for 7 meg. but dont really need it. They also said when the new core network is up and running, many places will be seeing 20-40 meg. services.

Fairpoint wants expansion versus Verizon's planned failure of rural areas. Nice shinny new Fairpoint trucks are all over the North country doin lots of pole sets and running fiber/copper. Time will tell but clearly fairpoint has the right idea of customer service despite the loads of negitive press as of late. You only hear about the small minorty of problems but never the mass of error free services.

I have stayed with Fairpoint DSL (formerly Verizon) primarily for the price. $14.99/month. Verizon dumped everyone in NH, ME & VT over to Fairpoint. Speed is as advertised & the only significant problem we encountered was during the Verizon to Fairpoint transition. Westell model 6100 is OK. I wonder if that is the source of the occasional problem when the phone rings or is answered. I performed the self installation with no problems. Our DSL service stayed up even during the great ice storm! We had no power or Comcast cable TV yet our phone & DSL was up the entire time. I was able to watch internet based entertainment on my Laptop (charged by our generator) for the entire 10 days we were without power & cable TV. The rest of my neighbors have Comcast broadband. They had no service for over a week! Fairpoint DSL has been good service for a good price.

    Piss poor fairpoint

Glad your happy with them. I'm paying $43.99 per month for a dry loop(no phone, dsl only). My service has been going down hill for the past 6 weeks. I was at 1.5Mb/s to over 2Mb/s and now I'm at 750Kb/s down and upload is 200 to 350 Kb/s .. The service simply sucks..and good luck getting a tech on the phone average wait is 40+ minutes..and they can't seem to fix it. Time to go back to cable.

I've had verizon in this area for a few years, it was always ok, not great. Living in central New Hampshire, there are very few options for internet. Either Metrocast (which is crap, always slow and laggy with a latency issue), or Verizon. Now that it's fairpoint, it's the same game with a new name. Catch is, for $10 more, you can get the 7 mbps service. Still lightyears below other areas. Comcast advertises 16 mbps - 50 mbps. All I can get? 7. I'm paying the same price as comcast subscribers for half of their lowest teir of service.

It's what it advertises, and it works, but I'd rather not be stuck in the stone age.

I estimate the $49 service to be about $55 with tax.

When was the last time you tried Metrocast?

I have been working like crazy to fix some of the problems out of the Laconia area, and I know that most of them are fixed.

    Just curious.

    Whatever

    @equant.net

    Comcast Speed vs Fairpoint Speed

Comcast cable-modem speeds claimed are based on ethernet over cable at non-peak traffic. That means you share that bandwidth with other users in the same subnet. Fairpoints DSL speeds are based on ATM over fiber or copper to the neighborhood, and copper to your premise, usually. That is dedicated speed regardless of how many in your neighborhood are online...

DSL vs Cable-modem threads are all over the net, and DSL almost always wins.

    Comcast and Metrocast

I don't have access to comcast this far north, and Metrocast's highest option is just around fairpoint's. I use Metrocast at work though, and even though the "speed" is the same, the latency is killer. Couldn't play games on that.
