Afrter trying and rejecting ATT call vantage, because it was so unreliable during a VERT stressful time in my life, I was once again looking for a cheap alternative to landline phone service, and saw the add for Magic Jack on TV. They advertise $20.00 per year on voice over IP.The initial financial outlay was around $40.00. They sent a Magic Jack phone jack, along with a short USB extension cord, and directions for installing. Piece of cake!
Unfortunately, because I run a very old Compaq Presario 5000, and have minimal RAM, the Magic Jack uses up a good chunk of resources, when it is running.
So, I mostly keep it unplugged, until I want to make a phone call. (keeping in mind that MOST of the people I talk to, are out of state.) I have kept a local land line, just in case, and when people call me, they call my landline. So, yes, I am surely getting what I have paid for, I have recently recommended Magic Jack to a friend, whose hubby is in the military, and they have recently been deployed to Japan. They bought a Magic Jack, and that is how they keep in touch. Works for them, works for me.
So far, I haven't needed to call any techs, because it works! I havden't been to their website in ages, for the same reason.
Reccomend??? Yes

I ordered the Magicjack device because I was getting rid of our POTS line and I figured this would be ok to gamble the 40 dollars on. Once I received the device I went through the setup which included downloading the softphone software and then choosing a phone number. There was several dropouts in the voice outgoing and receiving which was annoying but after having Vonage before nothing unusual to me. I found the ports that Magicjack uses and opened them up on my D-Link router and so far the call quality has improved. My wife has in fact called the Philippines several times using the Magicjack with no issues at all. So for 19.99 a year to renew I think I will stick with it for now. I have had it for 10 months to the date now.
Update 11/16/09: I am now in my second year of using Magic Jack. My wife uses it to call the Philippines at least 2 times a month. While the international rate to the Philippines may not be the best, I sure can't beat the cost for US and calls to Canada.

4-Oct-09 Update:
My brother in-law was cleaning the house and found the magicJack I gave him almost 2 years ago. I decided to take a look at some of the forums, and noticed things were pretty quiet regarding the device that frustrated me 2 years ago. So for another $19.95 I decided to give it a try again (my primary VOIP service is stable and satisfactory, so it was time to play with something again). I have to say, things seem to have improved. I first had to renew my license, and while at it, noticed that magicJack now had a local number for me. I changed my number to local one, plunked down my $19.95 and plugged the sucker in. The software updated, but I had an error 400, so thought rebooting might fix things...it didn't. I looked on the magicJack forum and saw another person had the same problem and a refresh of his account by magicJack support seemed to fix things. I initiated a chat session and within 10 minutes my account was refreshed and I was in business (support was actually helpful and prompt this go around). So I've been trying things out for the last week, and have to say, the service has been stable and altogether satisfactory (although it's only been a week). I did have a problem plugging it into a computer that I originally tried the magicJack on 2 years ago, in that the message said it would receive an update in 60 seconds, which never happened. I manually updated by going to the magicJack website, and that too worked and I was in business in about 2 minutes. After 40 or so calls over both wired broadband, and a 3G card, the service seems to work well. Pleasantly surprising! I'll update more after 6 months, but so far, so good for basic phone service and voicemail.
Original Review:
I bought a MagicJack because it looked like a cool little device that could save a lot on long distance bills. I already have a VOIP provider that I am happy with, but I thought if this gadget worked out I could dump them and save a lot of dough. The first thing I found is that the install didn't go as smooth as I would have liked. My computer is loaded with video and audio editing applications, and the MagicJack didn't seen to like what was on my system. After playing around a while, I was able to get it to work for a few days in a row, but then the softphone would die, and I would get frustrated. If the computer rebooted, it would hang unless I removed the MagicJack. Even when it did work, I would frequently get the "all circuits busy" message when calling during peak times. After a while I gave up and gave the device to my brother in-law, who didn't have much better luck than me. Right now I think it's sitting in a drawer somewhere. Best of luck to them, and I hope they get things worked out. It just wasn't worth saving $200 a year on VOIP bills at the cost of reliability. It seems that there are customers who have the device working with little issue, so I don't know that my experience is typical. Take it for what it's worth, another anonymous opinion on the internet.

| Good review You give a very fair review of this service in my opinion. It's not for everyone but if you have another line as your primary then MJ is a great second line. The call quality on MJ has improved in the last six months and they finally offer the option to port your number out. No porting in yet but this would not be something I would recommend to people with a number they have had for a long time. | |

UPDATE
October 6, 2009
I have tried to like the MagicJack service. I have used it for over 2 years now. There just isn't anything I can say that is positive about it. I finally unplugged the device from my computer and I am throwing in the towel. Poor call quality is the main reason. Now before you try telling me how it must be my ISP I have to say that I have been using VOIP service for years and have had little to no issues with call quality except for Magicjack. Calls are garbled and many times the person on the other end complains about not being able to hear me properly. I figure that if they don't have a good product by now, they never will. If you aren't looking for top notch reliable service and price is your only concern then I suppose Magicjack is the ticket. Otherwise, go with a reliable VOIP company, you will be better off in the long run. Now I have to sit down and read how to get this crappy software off my computer since there is no uninstall for it!
UPDATE
April 20, 2009
I've had the service for quite some time and from the very beginning I didn't feel comfortable with Magicjack being my primary phone service. Well nearly 2 years later and my thoughts haven't changed one bit. They sure know how to late-night market the hell out of this product and then they leave you hanging. Call quality and reliability is erratic. Service is non-existent. This is best suited as a second line when it does work. My guess is that after 2 years if they haven't got it right by now then chances are they never will. My best advice would be to take your money and buy the Jack Lalane power juicer or the sham wows instead. You probably will get much more use out of them.
UPDATE
11/6/2007
"Soon" seems to be the buzzword with this company. There have been some additional cities added to the list of available numbers but many more are still needed. They have been promising a webportal and other enhancements for months and someone claiming to be Dan Borislaw who posts here said that by the end of October these will take effect. Well it's the first week of November and I am lucky if I can keep my number working. Many times the servers are down and you have no service or no 911 or both.
Anytime anyone posts a negative someone shoots back that the product is in "beta." Well, when the hell does it come out of beta? It's been in beta for over 6 months already. They need to get their act together and start providing what they have promised to provide. Their customers are many times left hanging. They add new numbers and their current customers can't even switch over because the web portal isn't available. The Borislaw poster said that they will provide their beta customers an opportunity to get vanity numbers if they want to switch their number - wana bet that will never happen either?
It's high time for them to "put up or shut up!"
Original Post
I signed up for MagicJack a few weeks ago and received the device within a few days. Opened up the package and plugged into my USB port and within a few minutes I was up and running.
I wasn't too crazy about the phone number selections, absolutely nothing within my area (Metro Chicago) but they promised many new area codes by August 31st.
Now that the date has arrived for the new telephone numbers, nada - zero - zilch from the company. No news and no numbers but a lot of rumors circulating on their forums about extending the time frame.
I don't like the fact that any service or response from the company seems non-existent. They do not answer members in their forums and hardly ever reply to emails. They have no telephone numbers to call them either. They do claim to have a live chat support however for the several times that I visited it (during the hours it is supposed to be staffed) the only people I communicated with were other users looking for help.
Call quality has been good. But their software is a bit buggy. I don't like the fact that every time you start the computer up you have to physically select your 911 location - otherwise you have no 911 service. There are a few other bugs with the softphone but nothing that can't be corrected.
My opinion is that this company isn't ready to be a real VOIP company. I know that the MJ cheerleaders out there will tout the cost - which is pretty inexpensive but it carries with it the uncertanties of reliable service. I would say that for a second outgoing line it is reliable enough, but don't expect it to be a reliable primary service.

Our 911 is the easiest to use in the Business and you do not have to register each time.
The Area Code availibilty is posted clearly on the site and it says be end of September.
The features will start coming up quickly now
We will have major ,major upgrade most likely end of this week for software. This will include autorun for Vista which was a monster.MAC preview will be available within 30 days.
We expect to come out of BETA in October, and I believe we will be hitting all cylinders then.
Thank you for being a customer and I expect we will meet all your expectations by launch. The hard part was getting the best voice quality in the Biz,the rest of these requirements are much easier to accomplish.

| Let me clear up some of the confucion Mr. Borislow First of all, thank you for responding to my review. I would have been more inclined to give your company a better rating if you paid as much attention to your own user forums.
911 Service I didn't mean to suggest that you have to register every time, but you DO have to select your 911 location every time you restart the software. This really isn't something that is a new complaint, your customers have been suggesting that you fix it for weeks now.
Area Code Availability It was clearly posted back in July and August on your website that area codes would be available by September 1. That was your promise to your customers, not my wishful thinking. That promise has already been broken. Please do not try to suggest that I wasn't paying attention. I sincerely hope that you keep your promise this time around.
While I understand that this is a recent start up company who charges its' customers very little I do believe that if you intend to build good relationships you should keep your promises to your customers, or at the very least keep your customers informed. Pay attention to your user forums at your website and you will see what I mean. You should respond to customer requests for support and be available when you say you are on your live chat.
I'm not expecting miracles, I am willing to wait for added features and I don't mind a few hiccups along the way. That's the trade-off for getting such a reasonably priced service. I was one of the first Vonage customers and I still have their service. I take the good with the bad.
I wish you all the success with MagicJack and look forward to a long lasting relationship together!

| Thanks for you insight I remain confused by the 911 part. This should not happen. Please email me at dborislow@aol.com
As far as the customer service issues, please remember we are in Beta. You will see CS format has been changed dramatically this week. This weekend their is a major software upgrade coming out too.
The idea is to do enough things right, that we will not need Customer service. Our resources have been assigned to that goal.In my Last company, where we sold 4 million members on AOL Long Distance, the very first year we started the company in retail,we recieved the JDPowers awards.
The area code availability will be something that happens fast and furious, but will not happen until we build all our redundancy into our systems. It will be soon though.
I demand miracles from my people and you will see them.
Please contact me and I will help in anyway I can.I think you will see dramatic improvement in CS in the coming weeks before launch.
Thanks for being Patient.

| MagicJack settles with Fla. AG over customer complaints April 15, 2009
MagicJack settles with Fla. AG over customer complaints [South Florida Business Journal]
Floridas attorney general said Wednesday he has reached a settlement with MagicJack LP over charges the Palm Beach County company charged customers for a long distance phone service during what was supposed to be a free 30-day trial.
Bill McCollums office began investigating the companys business practices last July after receiving numerous complaints from consumers about the product, which connects a household phone to a computer, allowing customers to make unlimited long-distance calls over the Internet.
The investigation also found that the product had limitations that were not properly disclosed, and that the company did not have enough customer service agents to deal with consumer complaints, according to a news release from McCollums office.
As part of the settlement, the company has agreed to implement various new practices to assist its customers, including a guarantee that all inquires will be responded to within 24 business hours and a disclaimer on the first page of its Web site, clarifying the eligibility requirements to participate in a free trial offer.
The company, which has resolved the 500 customer complaints, also will reimburse the state for the costs associated with the investigation.

This is a great product. $20/yr I believe they offered you an extra 4 years for $5/year just ridiculously cheap. I did have to hack it to get rid of the popup screen that would interrupt my gaming everytime someone called (but now I don't have easy access to the PC interface but don't really care - it's just a phone to me).
Bad points: Occasionally when calling someone they can't hear me - I have to call back and then it works fine. Also like any other VOIP service it uses your internet connection if you are doing lots of uploading/downloading it can cause voice quality issues.
Good points: Cheap! The last time I had a voip home phone it cost $300/year. The time before that traditional land line ran me well over $500/year. This one is $20/year. Wow. Everyone in my family does have a cell phone but I like being able to call home and I like for my teenage daughter to not use her cell phone .

Update 29 Sept 2009: I just returned from two weeks in Italy, and MJ performed almost flawlessly! One call had some echo, so we just called back and it was just like a local call, as were the other 50 or so calls we made from my laptop over there. The Italian hotels don't have great connections, but once I turned off automatic DNS server detection and went to the 4.XXX ones, my connection speed increased dramatically.
My son bought me an MJ for Christmas. I installed it in less than ten minutes, including getting the phone number assigned! Wow! That was fast! Voice quality is good with a headset/microphone, and fair with my laptop's builtin speaker and microphone. All the features seem to work fine. I could switch between the headset and laptop microphone easily.
I will use it to replace my Vonage UT Starcom Wi-Fi phone, which has become difficult to use because it doesn't support authentication.
I will probably only use MJ while I'm travelling overseas, and I can't wait to give it a test from Paris.

| READ THIS!
Its nice to see some common sense users of this product for a change. The only issue with this device is IGNORANCE. After reading hundreds of I love it and I hate it posts, Ive come to a few conclusions.
1: Never buy ANY free 30day trial on ANYTHING!!! Get MJ from QVC, Circuit City etc... Then you have a hassle free return. ALL 30 DAY FREE TRIAL AND GIVE US YOURE CREDIT CARD NUMBER Companys will set on your money and give you the runaround, duh. Your and every other suckers money is letting them make interest off it. They ALL will bite you in the azz with the fine print. DON'T DO IT!
2: For the people that think that thing that comes out after you press the button on the front of the computer is an automated cup holder, youre too stupid to use this product. Hell, they probably have trouble operating a light switch and flushing the toilet. If you are a 1 on the (1 - 10) Tech Savvy Scale, save us the drudge of reading your negative post and don't even think about getting this product. It's way, way, way over your head. Go play with the light switch or something. MJ is a startup company running on a shoestring. Its $40 dollars! Its $40 dollars! Its $40 dollars! Its $40 dollars! Its $40 dollars! What do you expect them to do, send a tech to your house? Come on people get real. If you cant make it work then return it to Circuit City or QVC etc
Oh, you did the 30day free trial thing? DUH
you deserve the hassle. Just dont bore us with your post.
3: Paranoid people get up in the morning; check the weather etc
on Internet. Hello! Your ISP tracked what you did and the Weather web cookie and all the other cookies did theyre thing. Picked up your Cell phone and made a call, Hello! Your phone service tracked and logged your call, they also knew you were home because of the built in tracking system. Got in your car and stopped at intersection, got your picture taken by traffic cam. Somebody knows where you were at the time of day. Stopped to get gas, restaurant, shopping swiped your credit card, God only knows how many people got this information on what you bought. Went to work and your employer tracked every keystroke, oh and dont forget to smile for the candid camera. I looked your name up in the White pages and Goggled Earth your address, WOW! You got a really nice house dude. Maybe Ill pay you a visit and spy on you. You think MJ gives a rip about the above information? They just want to know local information so they can push you the latest add special from the local pizza place. Unless you live in a cave, get a life because this is your life, youre just too stupid to recognize it and all the bitching in the world is not going to change it. Install this on an old Pc, stick in the closet, plug in a wireless phone and forget about it. Now its out of site and out of mind. Just like all the above listed things you ignore every day.
4: This DOSE NOT and SHOULD NOT replace youre your phone system. Analyze what it can and cannot do for you. If it makes business sense then get it. If not, DONT slam this product because it doesnt meet your needs. This device saves me and millions of people like me lots of money.

AOL refugees designed it. BIG HINT!
Plugged it into a USB port and watched as it tried to take over sound system on computer. Software is crappy. NO UNINSTALLER!
Website: Good Lord. Did that make millions with ads guy write it? Don LaPre would be proud of an informercial website.
Device: Feels kinda cheap. I bet it breaks easy.
Sound: Call quality sucks. Echoes, tunnel sound, etc.
Price: Cheap like the device itself.
I think you need an IT degree to make it work right, but, hey, what do you expect for $39.95. Only AOL software is worse garbage to install on your computer.
Since they sell this on informercials, that should be the warning.
Yahoo and GV is free computer to computer and way better sound.
I bet MagicJack will not be around once nontechies like me get frustrated with it and put up YouTube videos of us burning them at a bonfire.
If you like it, fine. I don't care. XP Pro system by the way. I did use Vonage once and it was way better.

Its worth the money especially if you call LD. I plan on replacing my landline service with it because my connection is stable all the time, no problems with it so far.
The downside to the magicjack is not the device itself, but actually finding a good standalone internet service, cable may not be ideal but it all depends on where you live to. DSL seems to work best with MJ.
