Feeling "left out" in San Jose....

First let me tell you I have been with Sonic for several years and I am a very happy customer. I am glad to see Sonic grow into a local ISP.

I am on an ATT Remote terminal and get the best that ATT can offer @ 6M/768, but every time I read about Fusion and line bonding I am both happy and frustrated. I got flyer recently stating ATT finally offers U-Verse in my neighborhood. I loathe to switch to U-Verse just to have to jump through hoops to cancel the TV service (I am happy with DirectTV). Comcast has now come around with Blast. I must admit I am tempted to switch over to Comcast, but I am resisting the urge thus far.

What I really want is Sonic to provide either Fusion, Line Bonding or rebranded U-Verse without all the bundling requirements down in San Jose. Is there any hope of receiving more advanced products in San Jose beyond basic ADSL?

Help me Sonic.net you are my only hope....

Oh, and if you read the uverse stuff, you can't get any better speeds that what you're getting from Sonic.

Cable is another thing altogether. You can get superfast, but I don't it's going to be as rock solid...

Yes, San Jose is on our coverage road map! Construction does take time, so it's a way out there, but it will happen.

Hey, it wasn't on the map before, so I think that's progress!

This is good news. I am willing to be patient. But San Jose sprawls all over the place. Lets just hope they come to my neck of the woods early in the deployment. Oh and if you need some volunteers for early field trials - I would be more than happy to help out.

Can you give us a time frame - like mid 2010?

Sometime in 2010 would be a reasonable guess. Sorry I can't be more specific.

As for sprawl, this is a valid point. Fusion products are available today out to 11,100ft from central offices. That distance may extend over time, but not by a ton.

Our support team at support@sonic.net or 707-547-3400 can provide you with specific information on loop length if you're interested.

Thanks for the info Dane. I sent an email to support and they informed me that Fusion is not available in the COs in San Jose.

Nope, not yet - as I said, sometime next year.

I was under the assumption the above statement was in context to San Jose, not just Santa Rosa. Oh well will have to wait

We're up and running today in a number of communities:

San Francisco
Berkeley
Albany
Santa Rosa
Sebastopol
Petaluma
Windsor
Forestville
Rohnert Park
Healdsburg

You'll see a few more come online pretty soon - Sonoma, Oakland, Napa. Then San Rafael, and beyond that point the order of delivery becomes murky.

San Jose will be served in future, but not this year.

With all due respect - then why knowing this thread was about San Jose would you ask me to call or email support to get a loop length for a non-existent service?

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

Our staff can give you an exact current CO distance today. (If the sales rep cannot obtain this specific info, have them push to DSL provisioning or support for that data.)

The Fusion products are available out to 11,100ft. Knowing this gives you an idea of whether or not you'll be in range when we do finally deliver down there.

If for example you wanted 30Mbps/2Mbps bonded, you'd be limited to 5,000ft. If you wanted 12Mbps/1Mbps or 18Mbps/2Mbps bonded, those are limited to 6,500ft.

So if they were to say that you are 25,000ft from the CO, and 3000ft from a remote terminal, you'd be able to make a near term decision better informed. (Buy AT&T line shared today from us at up to 6Mbps, or Comcast, or U-Verse, etc.)

"Knowing is half the battle" or whatever, right?

And I emailed support just like you said and got a loop length from them. When it is good to go, I will be too.

Ah - that clears things up considerably. With that I have now asked support for my loop length to the CO. Thanks for the clarification.

I am over 11,000 feet from the CO and 2,500 from the RT. Do any of the future plans for San Jose include RT deployments?

RTs are being considered, but if and when we did RT deployments they would likely be in the North Bay. It's not a realistic expectation for San Jose, at least in the forseeable future.

Ouch! This is bad news for anybody in San Jose who is not within 11,000 feet of the CO. Anybody in San Jose on a RT who wants faster internet is limited to either ATT U-Verse or Comcast. So truth be told I really am "left out" by Sonic in San Jose when it comes to future deployments.
