news.sonic.net binary retention

I may just be imagining this but it seems like retention has gone up significantly in the last few months. I recall something like 10 to 15 days of binary retention (with my newsgroup reader automatically going to the supernews backup server for older posts) but now it seems like I'm getting things 25 or 30 days old on news.sonic which is so nice because it is so fast! Was there an upgrade that I missed?

What is the current binary retention on news.sonic.net?

On our locally hosted news box, we're at about 40 days. On the outsourced offering, it's at a bit over 200 days.

Wow, that is great to hear!

I know you guys don't advertise the newsgroup access very much with the Fusion products but I think it is a real selling point. Most ISPs throttle the speed, set a cap on the downloads per day, or have poor retention. This is not the case with sonic.net...

I assume bandwidth to the sonic.net newsgroups is cheaper as the traffic stays on your network.

I'm a bit hesitant to promote news because of the big impact it can have on the aggregation portion of the network. With AT&T DSL, that's one of the largest costs.

With Fusion, we control that all ourselves, so it's less of an issue.

That said, most customers don't understand nor care about NNTP.

Well, newsgroup access can suck up a tremendous amount of bandwidth so I completely understand why you wouldn't want to promote it.

I didn't really understand or care about NNTP until I realized how superior it is compared to P2P in terms of speed an anonymity.

I know for a fact that on more than 1 occasion I hit over 100gb all due to S.nets newsgroups.

One could do that in a day with the higher speed tiers of the Fusion service.
