but for anyone in Connecticut, we have some changes to our State's telephone dialing in less than a month.

| One question about the telephone area code changes - will allnew cell phones begining next month activated in the 860 calling region be delegated to use the 959 prefix? I heard about the 10 digit dialing for all calls. Does this include ones in your prefix or local call area too? |

This was more of a notice if you have relatives that live up there.
Like I told someone else in another forum, not everyone has relatives that live in CT. Some may live in WI for all I know. |

Answer 1: When they run out of 860 numbers, they start handing out 959 numbers. It's handled according to what carrier has which prefixes assigned to it. Once a carrier has used all their assigned prefixes in 860 and there aren't any more available, they get 959-xxx prefixes.
Answer 2: Starting December 1st, you'll have to use the area code for all calls including local ones. |

| actually, its Nov 14th when the 10 digit local dialing totally kicks in and if you try to dial a local number without the area code, you'll get a 'denial' from your carrier. right now you can do either 7 digit or 10 digit local dialing.

I don't understand why when I dial a local number that currently require the area code it: rings three times before realizing I need to dial the area code, and then instructs me hang-up and redial when it could just re-dial for me, or forward the call on. Currently, if I include the area code for a local call that does not need the area code, I get a message telling me NOT to include it. Could the system just be programed to ignore the area code?
Thankfully, this switch over will fix a lot of these current problems. Sorry about the mini-rant. Happy it's getting fixed. |

well in the telephone world, its called 'call routing'. it takes the digits you dial, looks at an 'access list' so to speak. then routes/denies that call as its programmed into the 5E central office switch. it works exactly the same way with your big business phone system at work. a set of rules determine how your call is routed that costs your company the least amount of money.
as far as re-dialing a number or forwarding a call that the system 'knows' you didn't dial correctly.. the phone companies aren't in the business of correcting your call. they want you to dial it correctly because every call costs the telephone carriers money. they want you to dial it on your own so they can charge you correctly.
and yes, the telecommunication carriers can add to, subtract from, or change the digits you dial if it is programmed to do that in the system. as far as i know, the carriers have been adding your specific area code to the digits dialed for a local call since May when the 'soft' transition went into effect allowing you to dial 10 digits for a local call.
nothing is getting fixed really. they are having to add new area codes to Connecticut because the carriers (local, VoIP, wireless) will be running out of numbers in the current area codes.
