 Can no longer send email

As of last night, I can no longer send email from my home computer. This morning, I discovered I can't send email from my office computer, which is in a different location than the home computer. I keep getting "The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server smpt.att.yahoo.com failed". No settings on either machine have been changed. I called ATT tech support several times, but they could not help. They also said they aren't having any email issues. I am using the latest version of Thunderbird. Is there anyone here that might be able to help? Thank you.

These sever access problems periodically happen. It's a Yahoo problem too and AT&T doesn't know anything about it. Usually this will resolve itself after a few days.

Those poor people who have happened to switch their email settings during this server "outage" are screwed because they will think it is something they have done.

Sometimes switching to a known working email server IP will fix it.

You could also use Web mail in a pinch.

See other reports of the problem: »excuse the expression: its that time of the month again

Use smtp.att.yahoo.com instead.

I was having the same problem. Haven't been able to send e-mail for over 24 hours.

On another forum, someone said they talked to ATT and the tech said they did some kind of server maintenance on Tuesday. If you're unable to send, they suggested going into your mail settings and changing your SMTP username from user%whatever.net to user@whatever.net.

I made the change and it's working. Apparently it may revert back to needing the %, the ATT tech wasn't sure. So if this stops working, just change it back.

Thanks for the help. I changed the % to @ and it is working again. I do know of a couple of other people in my city that are having the same problem. For what it's worth, when I spoke to ATT help twice the other day, they told me they have now started charging for tech support. I'm not sure when that started.

The mail issues need to be dealt with by ATT and Yahoo, but they arent going to do it. I was told some time back that mail is a luxury and that it is also a pain, thats why ATT and its sister companies dumped it.

Since giving the task to Yahoo I have random send and receive issues. Even when checking via webmail, I get a Yahoo error message that reports all will be fine shortly.

My problems started again about 4 days ago so I went and got my own domain for the family, no issues here now!

Also by having my own domain, I can leave ATT and not have to worry about loosing any emails!

Theres no way ATT does not know, in my last report to the very helpful employees direct forum here, they had several folks calling me to help.

Their response was after 11 years, my line is too noisy for my speed! They also sent a new modem to try, I have yet to do it because all of the issues had resolved, but soon returned after a week of being clear.

I guess in the end, ATT wins since I had to go and spend extra money to get my mail, but at least I am getting my mail now!

That's the key, getting out of one company's tight grasp and staying flexible.

Microsoft does their own version of this and it's why there exists an Open Systems initiative.
