| [DSL] I'm less than thrilled with DSLX lately
I've been a DSLX customer for years. And for the most part, I have had good service. I'm on the 6Mb fixed price plan and our RT is like half a block away. Over the last couple months, my connection has been mediocre at best. Way higher ping rates than usual and the connection seems to drop more frequently (twice last week). Today, my speeds were an appalling 2.5Mb down. I reset the modem and speeds seems to be a little more normal. However, some sites are still really slow or do not come up at all. For example, www.speedtest.net never finishes loading and neither does www.macnn.com. Nothing has changed on my network or my phone lines. Same results for wired and wireless computers. What's the deal?
Honestly, I would love to finally get off DSL and get some fiber connection. But... I live in an AT&T area and I do not want their Uverse crap (I love my DirecTV). AT&T is pure evil as far as I'm concerned. |

I keep having to remind myself of what dial-up on a single phone line was like. I had 768K service which was supposedly upgraded to 1M about a year ago. There's been no discernible improvement. A speed test just a minute ago showed 566K. |

| reply to g4jedi I know what you mean. I live in the AT&T San Diego area and I've been on 6Mb/768 for a couple of years. Lately the drop outs have been getting worse and today it's more of the same. I even upgraded my wiring since my old house had really crappy wiring. I'm now running CAT 6 from the NID to a whole house DSL filter, and CAT 6 from the filter to my DSL modem. The lines at my house are clean as can be but once again in the afternoon my DSL modem is starting to loose synch and then the download speed is cut after the modem synchs again. BTW in my area there has been a rush of UVerse installs and every other day I see the AT&T truck out at the street cabinet where they ran there fiber too. I don't think it a coincidence that my DSL connection is suffering due to the UVerse changes that are being made out at the street. Can't prove it yet though. Sigh! |

| Exact same scenario here man. I live in San Diego North County. Ever since AT&T started messing around with our RT and installing Uverse in our area, my DSL hasn't been up to the usual DSLX standards. That said, I do not think it's coincidence. Anyone at DSLX care to chime in on this issue? |

| Hi Jason -
Thanks for sending over your info. I took a look at your current line readings. Though they are a little marginal you are in sync at the full 6000/768. I went ahead and rebuilt you in our router to clear the connection.
What modem are you currently using?

| reply to g4jedi Ok, here is the results from the speed test on DSLX's website:

I'm not having good results from any of those "flash" tests. But the javascript test looks normal:

My favorite speed test site, www.speedtest.net still takes a decade to even load... I dunno whats up with that. I eventually give up because I get tired of waiting. That could be an OpenDNS issue.
SO... maybe I need a new DSL modem? Both those speedstreams are like 10 years old. FYI: When my connection drops, I have all green lights. But when I reset the modem, the connection comes back. |

| FYI, about a year ago i got my modem replaced when AT&T couldn't find anything wrong with the line. If anything, things cleared up for about 6 months and then it progressively got worse and worse. The problem at my house appeared to get progressively worse with every more and more UVerse installs. How do i know this, I can use my Linux system to scan the airwaves and I can now see over 20 UVerse wireless routers around my house when there used be only 3. Now these are only the ones close enough that i can get a signal from. I have no doubt there are more than that in my local area connect to the RT. I'm about 90% sure that AT&T is cutting back third party bandwidth when the load is required by UVerse users. It would be nice if someone could actually show me the proof that I'm wrong. |

1 edit | reply to g4jedi I'm having the same issues here. Have the 6mbps/768k package. I get the advertised speeds during the morning and afternoon, but at night the speed drops more than HALF, and I gotten speeds below 2Mbps. Kinda sucks that ican't watch netflix high streaming because of this. ooo 3mpbs..on dslextreme's own server (it's lower on other servers)
And i doubt it's line issue, since dslextreme has ran line tests 4-5 times, and found no issues.

| Hi taxman,
I took a look at your current line readings and they look great. I show you in sync at the full rate. Are you tested directly connected to the modem or are you using a router? What speed test site are you using to test?

4 edits | George I'm connected directly to the modem. This only happens during night time...dunno why it happens during the night.
I used megapath in SF, and it gave me this...

Forgot to mention this started happening 2-3 weeks ago.. and I doubt i have viruses or anything that's eating the bandwidth since I see no heavy internet activity.
10:37 pm edit. And now I think about it, this is the same timeframe when my modem sync would go off (would only occur once per day, which is odd)..which happened to me a minute ago.
11:40 Pm edit (my speed is back to normal)

| Not that it's important but if you don't mind answering I'd be interested in what physical location you are located. I'm still trying to determine if these types of issues are centered on the San Diego area or if others in Calif. or elsewhere are having issues like this. Thanks. |

| reply to g4jedi Woke up this morning, DSL was down. I had all green lights as usual, but no internet connection. Reset the modem, it came right back. Hopefully a new modem solves this issue. I should mention, I work from home full-time now, so having my internet connection fail is a loss of productivity. |

| I just installed a new D-Link that they sent me and so far things look real good. The other day i had the "all green" lights with no WAN connection while i was on the phone with tier 1. So far things definitely look better at my house. BTW My previous modem was a Motorola that AT&T dropped off when they were last at my house about 8 months ago. It had no Model type or number and when I tried to read the info to tier 1 they didn't appear to know what it was. None the less they sent me a new modem and things are looking up. Hope it goes well with you also. Cheers. |

George, Are you feeling better now? Back in action? If so, has my replacement modem been sent out? Hope you are feeling better. |
