Because I can!

Four 360s with no issues.
Really, if you're looking at your 360s and say "welp, mine have no issues, so the hundreds of thousands of 360s that have died do not exist", then you're extremely naive.

PS3
The kid will get bored with Wii and Xbox's break down pretty fast.
I have 2 kids and they hate Wii.
Wii or Xbox. The PS3 is a waste of money.
The Wii is definately not boring and it is the best value.

Think what you will. You obviously know little about why an XBox can have issues with the chip becoming unseated due to overheating. Simple proper cooling is the answer. An if you have an older XBox 360 and you get the issue, it's an easy fix, but I've not had an issue even with my oldest box.

So you don't believe that millions of people have had their 360s die?

For little kids with parents allergic to violence... the Wii is really your only option tbh.

The older boxes with the issue didn't die; the chip was unseated. Like I said; easy fix to re-seat the chip and add thermal washers, etc.

I had to send in 2 xbox's for repairs and 2 died after the warranty ran out.
I haven't heard of many people sending their PS3 back for repairs.

Not everyone is as technically inclined as you are. You can't say you "disagree that xboxs fail" because you know how to fix them. If the chip is unseated, the xbox is dead. You honestly expect consumers to bust open their 360s, void their warranty, and try to fix it themselves?

And as long as we're throwing out anecdotal evidence, I'm on my 4th 360. The first two's disc drive went out, and the third red ringed.

The XBox 360s in question with the issues were made prior to Oct 2007, so how does this translate to 2008, 2009?

There is a myriad of problems with the 360 besides the RRoD. E74 errors, disc drive failure, etc.

I'm not saying it isn't a good investment. I don't regret my purchase at all because the 360 is awesome. With the 1 year warranty and the 3 year extension for the most common errors, it's not such a risky purchase anymore.

All I'm saying is that it's ignorant to say "I disagree with an XBox breaking down quickly".

OK. So far here what I get:

XBox: ?not as good an option because of his lousy internet but good graphics, hardware issues resolved?

Wii: Most family friendly, most affordable, lower graphics quality because no HDMI?

PS3: Great graphics, higher priced, comes with blue ray, not as many family friendly games? HDMI

Another option is to get a ps3 and have the adult games for the adults. Then install Linux on it with an NES or SNES emulator. Make a locked down account for the kid that can only run or browse what you approve and make a big easy launch icon for the emulators. Voila! You can even connect a usb gamepad to make it like the good old days. The ps3 is powerful enough without GPU acceleration to run those emulators.

I'm not sure why his "lousy internet" would be a mark against the 360 but not the PS3.

Anyway, for an 8 year old, I'd go for a wii.

Is there a store around you that lets people try the console?
The walMart here has Xbox and PS3 set up so you can see what you like.
